Stop Premature Graying in Its Tracks: Our Expert Advice
As salon professionals, we often encounter clients who are concerned about premature graying. Whether you’re in your 20s or 30s, spotting those first few gray hairs can be a bit unnerving. But as experts in hair care and color, we want to assure you that premature graying is a natural process, and there are numerous ways to manage and embrace it.
In this guide, we'll share professional insights on the causes of premature graying, offer tips to help prevent it, and recommend the best salon treatments to keep your hair looking vibrant and healthy.
Understanding the Causes of Premature Graying
Premature graying occurs when the pigment-producing cells in your hair follicles, known as melanocytes, decrease or stop producing melanin. Here’s what could be contributing to this:
Genetic Factors: If early graying runs in your family, it’s likely you might experience it too. Genetics play a significant role in when and how your hair starts to gray.
Stress: While stress might not directly cause gray hair, it can accelerate the aging process, including the onset of gray strands.
Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of essential nutrients like Vitamin B12, iron, and copper can lead to premature graying. As salon experts, we recommend a balanced diet to support your hair's health.
Health Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid issues or autoimmune diseases, can trigger early graying. We always advise clients to consult with their healthcare provider if they notice significant changes in their hair.
Lifestyle Choices: Smoking, poor diet, and excessive exposure to the sun can also speed up the graying process. These factors affect overall hair health, not just its color.
Salon-Approved Prevention Tips
While we can’t turn back time or change genetics, there are ways to delay premature graying and keep your natural color for longer. Here’s what we recommend as your go-to salon experts:
Maintain a Balanced Diet: Your hair reflects your overall health. We suggest incorporating foods rich in B vitamins, iron, and copper. Think leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and fish.
Manage Your Stress: Stress management is crucial not just for your hair but for your overall well-being. Techniques such as meditation, yoga, or regular exercise can help keep your stress levels in check.
Protect Your Hair from UV Damage: Just as you protect your skin from the sun, your hair needs protection too. We recommend using hair products with UV filters or simply wearing a hat when you’re out in the sun.
Quit Smoking: Smoking impacts blood circulation, which can affect your hair follicles and lead to premature graying. If you’re a smoker, quitting can improve your hair’s health.
Hydration is Key: Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining healthy hair. It helps keep your hair hydrated and vibrant.
Professional Treatment Options
If you’re noticing gray hairs and prefer to cover them, or simply want to explore your options, here are some of our top salon treatments:
Customized Hair Coloring: As salon professionals, we can create a custom color blend that matches your natural hair or gives you a new, refreshed look. From permanent dyes to semi-permanent options, we’ll help you find the best solution for your lifestyle and preferences.
Gray Blending Techniques: For clients who want a more subtle approach, we recommend gray blending techniques. These can soften the contrast between your natural color and gray hairs, giving you a natural, low-maintenance look.
Embrace the Silver: Many clients are now choosing to embrace their gray hair. With the right haircut and styling, gray hair can be incredibly chic. We offer toning treatments to enhance the shine and vibrancy of your natural silver strands.
When to Consult a Professional
If you’re experiencing other symptoms alongside premature graying, such as hair thinning or scalp issues, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider. We also suggest regular salon visits to keep your hair healthy and well-maintained. Curious about which Fix Salon stylist is your perfect match? Are Split Ends Sabotaging Your Style? Here’s How to Fight Back!
Split ends are a common hair concern that can affect the overall health and appearance of your hair. Understanding what causes split ends and how to prevent them is crucial for maintaining strong, beautiful hair. In this guide, we'll explore the causes of split ends, effective prevention tips, treatments, and products to help you combat this issue.
What Are Split Ends?
Split ends, or trichoptilosis, occur when the protective outer layer of the hair cuticle is damaged or worn away. This causes the hair strand to split into two or more strands, making the hair appear frayed and unhealthy. If left untreated, split ends can lead to further breakage and damage along the hair shaft.
Causes of Split Ends
Several factors contribute to the development of split ends:
Heat Styling: Excessive use of hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons can weaken the hair cuticle and cause split ends.
Chemical Treatments: Coloring, bleaching, and perming can strip the hair of its natural oils and weaken its structure.
Mechanical Damage: Rough brushing, using elastic bands, or towel-drying vigorously can damage the hair cuticle.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to sun, wind, and pollution can dry out the hair and make it more prone to splitting.
Poor Hair Care Habits: Using harsh shampoos, skipping regular trims, and not moisturizing the hair properly can contribute to split ends.
Prevention Tips
Preventing split ends starts with adopting good hair care habits:
Regular Trims: Schedule trims every 6-8 weeks with your Fix Salon stylist to remove split ends and prevent them from traveling up the hair shaft.
Reduce Heat Styling: Use heat styling tools on low heat settings and apply a heat protectant spray before styling.
Gentle Washing: Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.
Protective Styling: Avoid hairstyles that pull on the hair and use accessories that are gentle on the strands.
Silk or Satin Pillowcase: Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and minimize breakage.
Treatment Options
If you already have split ends, consider these treatments:
Deep Conditioning Masks: Use a nourishing mask once a week to hydrate and strengthen the hair.
Leave-In Conditioners: Apply a leave-in conditioner to moisturize the ends and protect against further damage.
Oil Treatments: Use natural oils like argan oil or coconut oil to nourish and seal the ends of the hair.
Split End Serums: Apply a split end serum to temporarily bind split ends and improve the appearance of the hair.
Recommended Products
Here are some products we recommend to help prevent and treat split ends:
Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique: Heat-activated reconstructing milk that protects against heat styling and strengthens hair.
Mizani 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Treatment: Lightweight leave-in conditioner that helps prevent split ends and detangles hair.
Complete Your Routine with the Kérastase Résistance line
The Mizani 25 Miracle Collection. For All Texture Types.

Hair Loss 101: Everything You Need to Know
August marks National Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Hair loss can be a sensitive and challenging experience, impacting not only appearance but also self-esteem and confidence. Whether you're personally dealing with hair loss or know someone who is, this month serves as a reminder that you're not alone, and there are many resources and treatments available to help.
In this blog, we’ll explore the common causes of hair loss, share some surprising facts, and offer practical tips to maintain healthy hair.
Hair Loss Facts: What You Need to Know
Hair Loss is More Common Than You Think:
Approximately 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States alone experience some degree of hair loss. It can start as early as your twenties or thirties, though it becomes more prevalent with age.
Androgenetic Alopecia is the Leading Cause:
Also known as male or female pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition that affects the hair's natural growth cycle, leading to gradual thinning and loss.
Stress Plays a Major Role:
High levels of stress can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium, where a large number of hair follicles enter the resting phase, leading to increased shedding.
Nutrition Matters:
A diet lacking in essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin D, and biotin, can contribute to hair loss. Ensuring a balanced diet is crucial for healthy hair growth.
It's Not Just About Aging:
While aging is a significant factor, hair loss can also be caused by hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, medications, and even certain hairstyles that put too much tension on the hair.
Tips to Maintain Healthy Hair
Embrace a Nutrient-Rich Diet:
Incorporate foods rich in vitamins and minerals like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins. These nutrients support hair health and can prevent deficiencies that lead to hair loss.
Be Gentle with Your Hair:
Avoid excessive brushing, tight hairstyles, and harsh chemical treatments. Opt for gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that nourish your scalp and hair.
Manage Stress:
Engage in activities that help reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise. Lowering stress levels can help reduce hair loss and promote overall well-being.
Consult with a Hair Stylist
A professional hair stylist can assess your hair's condition and recommend products, treatments, and styling techniques tailored to your needs. They can also advise on hairstyles that minimize tension and reduce the risk of breakage, helping to preserve the health of your hair.
Our recommendations:
Kérastase Genesis Serum Anti-Chute Fortifiant: A fortifying serum designed to reduce hair fall due to breakage. It nourishes the scalp, leaving hair stronger and more resilient.
Redken Extreme Length Shampoo and Extreme Length Conditioner: Formulated with biotin, this duo strengthens hair from root to tip, reducing breakage and promoting healthier, longer hair.
5. Regular Scalp Massages:
Massaging your scalp increases blood circulation, promoting hair growth. You can use essential oils like rosemary or peppermint oil during the massage for added benefits.
Hair Loss Myths Debunked
Myth: Wearing Hats Causes Baldness
Truth: Hats do not cause baldness. Hair loss is largely determined by genetics and other factors, not by external pressure from hats or caps.
Myth: Washing Your Hair Every Day Causes Hair Loss
Truth: Washing your hair daily does not cause hair loss. However, using harsh shampoos or washing with hot water can strip the hair of its natural oils, which may lead to dryness and breakage.
Myth: Hair Loss Only Affects Men
Truth: Hair loss affects both men and women. While it's more observed in men, millions of women also experience significant hair loss.
National Hair Loss Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate ourselves about the realities of hair loss and explore ways to maintain healthy hair. Whether through diet, stress management, or professional treatments, there are many ways to address hair loss and boost your confidence.
Remember, hair loss is a common issue, and seeking support is the first step toward managing it. If you’re concerned about hair loss, consult a healthcare professional to explore the best options for you.
Let this month be a time to celebrate the hair you have and take steps to protect and nurture it for the future!

Managing Oily Scalp: Proven Strategies You Should Try
Struggling with greasy hair? You’re not alone. Excess oil can make your hair look limp and dirty, but with the right products and practices, you can keep your locks fresh and vibrant. Here’s a quick guide to managing oily hair, balancing your scalp, and preventing damage.
Understanding Oily Scalp
Greasy hair is usually caused by the overproduction of sebum, the natural oil produced by your scalp. While sebum is essential for keeping your hair healthy and protected, too much of it can make your hair look oily and flat. Factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, diet, and improper hair care routines can contribute to excess oil production.
Tips for a Balanced Scalp
1. Avoid Over-Washing
Shampoo and Conditioner Smartly: Wash every 2-3 days to avoid over-drying. Apply conditioner primarily to the ends of your hair, where oil struggles to reach, and focus on cleansing your scalp without conditioning it.
Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is a lifesaver for greasy hair. It helps absorb excess oil and adds volume, making your hair look fresh between washes. Simply spray it onto your roots, let it sit for a few minutes, and then brush it out. Our recommendation: Redken Deep Clean Dry Shampoo
The benefits: Redken's Deep Clean Dry Shampoo provides heavy duty oil absorption for all hair types. Formulated with Vitamin C and B5, this high-performance dry shampoo eliminates excess oil to refresh the hair, leaving it looking and feeling clean. Use it to refresh up to fourth day hair.
2. Rinse with Cool Water
Hot water can stimulate your scalp to produce more oil. Rinse your hair with cold water to help close the hair cuticles and reduce oil production.
3. Choose the Right Hairbrush:
Use a boar bristle brush to distribute the natural oils from your scalp throughout your hair. This helps prevent the oil from accumulating at the roots and gives your hair a more balanced appearance.
4. Maintain a Healthy Diet
Diet plays a significant role in the health of your scalp and hair. Reduce your intake of greasy and sugary foods, and incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into your diet. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and flaxseeds, can also help regulate oil production.
5. Avoid Overuse of Heat Tools
Heat Protection
Excessive heat styling can stimulate your scalp to produce more oil. Try to minimize the use of blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. When you do use heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant to safeguard your hair.
Our recommendation: Kerastase Kératine Thermique, a taming heat-protecting blowdry milk for unruly hair in need of discipline. The thermo-protective agents in this milk sceal the scales of the hair fiber protecting it from the blowdryer and heat styling tools up to 180°C.
6. Switch Up Your Part
Changing your hair part regularly can prevent oil from building up in one area. This simple trick can help your hair look fresher and less greasy.
If you’re seeking a specific solution for your hair concerns, we’re here to help! Schedule an appointment with your Fix Salon stylist today and let us provide the perfect solution for your hair needs!

Fine Hair Fix: Your Ultimate Guide to Creating Volume in Fine Hair
Are you tired of your fine hair falling flat no matter what you do? You're not alone! Fine hair often struggles to maintain volume and can leave you yearning for that bouncy, full-bodied look. But fear not – with the right techniques and products, you can transform your limp locks into voluminous hair. In this blog, our expert stylists share some effective tips and product recommendations to help you create volume in fine hair.
Tips to Add Volume to Fine Hair
1. Choose the Right Haircut
Layers: Opt for a layered haircut to add movement and texture. Layers create the illusion of volume and prevent your hair from looking too flat.
Blunt Ends: If you prefer a blunt cut, keep the ends sharp and avoid thinning shears, as they can make fine hair look even thinner.
2. Blow-Dry Upside Down and Use Velcro Rollers
After washing your hair, flip your head upside down and blow-dry your hair from the roots to the ends. This technique lifts the roots and creates instant volume. Use a round brush while blow-drying to add lift and shape to your hair. After blow-drying, set your hair in large Velcro rollers and let them cool for about 20 minutes. Allow your hair to cool completely before removing the rollers to set the volume. This adds volume and bounce to your hair.
3. Tease Your Hair
Gently tease the roots of your hair with a fine-tooth comb to create volume. Be careful not to over-tease, as this can lead to breakage. Work in small sections and tease the hair at the crown for a natural-looking lift.
8. Change Your Part
Changing your part can instantly add volume to your hair. If you typically part your hair on one side, try flipping it to the opposite side for a fresh, voluminous look.
Our Stylists’ Product Recommendations for Styling Fine Hair
Redken Big Blowout Volumizing Heat Protecting Jelly
This blowout gel melts into hair to provide a voluminous blowout to all hair types and textures.

Say Goodbye to Frizz: Achieve Smooth, Sleek Hair with These Tips
Taming the Frizz: Your Ultimate Guide to Smooth, Sleek Hair
Are you constantly battling frizzy hair? You're not alone. Many women find themselves frustrated with frizz, dreaming of smooth, sleek locks. In this guide, we'll explore why frizz happens and discover effective solutions to achieve the hair of your dreams while addressing the fear of hair loss.
Understanding Frizz
Frizz occurs when the outer layer of your hair, known as the cuticle, lifts and allows moisture to enter the hair shaft. This causes hair to swell and appear frizzy. Let's dive into the common causes of frizz.
Common Causes of Frizz
Humidity: Moisture in the air is absorbed by the hair, causing it to swell and frizz.
Dryness: Lack of moisture in your hair can lead to frizz as dry hair tries to absorb moisture from the air.
Damage: Heat styling, chemical treatments, and harsh brushing can damage the hair cuticle, leading to frizz.
Hair Type: Curly and wavy hair types are more prone to frizz due to their natural texture.
Tips for Smooth, Sleek Hair
Hydration is Key: Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair moisturized. Look for products with ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and glycerin.
Regular Deep Conditioning: Treat your hair to a deep conditioning mask once a week to restore moisture and repair damage.
Use a Leave-in Conditioner: A good leave-in conditioner can help manage frizz and keep your hair smooth throughout the day.
Protect from Heat: Minimize heat styling and always use a heat protectant spray when you do style your hair.
Silk Pillowcases: Sleep on silk pillowcases to reduce friction and prevent frizz.

Celebrating Diversity: Cultural Influences on Hair
Hair is more than just strands on our heads; it's a reflection of culture, history, and identity. Around the world, diverse communities have developed unique traditions and styles that showcase their heritage and values. In this blog post, we'll explore global hair cultures, celebrating the beauty of diversity and showcasing hairstyles inspired by different cultural traditions.
Exploring Global Hair Traditions:
Africa: From intricate braids to vibrant head wraps, African hair traditions are rich in cultural significance. Braiding techniques like cornrows and twists carry symbolic meanings, reflecting age, status, and tribe. The African diaspora has fostered a rich tapestry of hair culture, where hairstyles like braids, cornrows, and locs serve as a form of cultural expression and resistance. These styles not only celebrate African heritage but also challenge Eurocentric beauty standards, reclaiming autonomy over one's appearance.
Asia: From the sleek, straight hair of East Asia to the voluminous, textured locks of Southeast Asia, Asian hair comes in a variety of colors, textures, and lengths, reflecting the region's genetic diversity. Traditional hair care often involves natural ingredients like coconut oil, rice water, and herbal extracts, prized for their nourishing properties and ability to maintain hair health.
Middle East: In many Middle Eastern cultures, hair is considered a symbol of beauty and femininity, often adorned with elaborate accessories and embellishments for special occasions. Traditional styles such as braids, updos, and intricate patterns are commonly seen, each carrying its own cultural significance.
Native America: Hair braids among Native American women carry deep cultural significance, reflecting tradition, spirituality, and resilience. Braiding is not just a styling choice but a sacred practice passed down through generations. Each braid tells a story, representing elements of nature, personal journeys, and community ties. Despite historical oppression, Native American women have preserved the tradition, using braids as symbols of pride and cultural identity.
Showcasing Inspired Hairstyles:
African-Inspired Braids: Braids are not only a form of artistic expression but also serve practical purposes, such as protecting hair from the harsh African sun and promoting hair growth. They have become a symbol of pride and resilience, reclaiming space in mainstream fashion.
Asian-Inspired Updos: Hair in Asia is a reflection of the continent's diverse cultures, traditions, and beauty ideals. Across Asia, hair is revered as a symbol of vitality and well-being, with various cultures boasting unique hair care practices and styling techniques passed down through generations.
Middle Eastern Elegance: Features sleek ponytails, voluminous curls, or elegant chignons, adding jeweled pins or silk scarves for sophistication.
Indigenous Styles: Today, hair braids continue to serve as powerful reminders of heritage and resilience within Native American communities.
In recent years, there's been a growing movement towards cultural appreciation over appropriation, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the roots and cultural origins of hairstyles, and fostering mutual respect. Understanding the cultural influences on hair reveals its role in connecting personal expression, societal norms, and heritage. It's crucial to approach hairstyles with sensitivity and respect their cultural significance. By appreciating rather than appropriating, we promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity, honoring cultural heritage and fostering harmony.

The Art of Balayage
Balayage has become synonymous with effortless, sun-kissed hair, coveted by clients seeking a natural-looking color that requires minimal maintenance. But what exactly is balayage, and how can you ensure your color lasts while keeping your locks healthy and vibrant? We'll delve into the different types of balayage, how to maintain your color, and recommend products to keep your hair looking its best.
Understanding Balayage:
Balayage, which translates to "sweeping" in French, is a highlighting technique where color is hand-painted onto sections of hair to create soft, natural-looking dimension. Unlike traditional foiling methods, balayage allows for a more customized and blended result, with lighter pieces strategically placed to mimic the effects of the sun.
Types of Balayage:
Traditional Balayage: This classic technique involves painting lighter strands onto the surface of the hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends for a sun-kissed effect. The result is subtle, with a seamless blend between the natural hair color and the highlights.
2. Babylights Balayage: Babylights are ultra-fine highlights that mimic the natural variations in hair color seen in children. When combined with balayage, they create a soft, delicate look that adds brightness and dimension without appearing too stark.
3. Ombre Balayage: Ombre balayage features a more dramatic contrast between the roots and ends, with darker roots gradually fading into lighter tips. This creates a bold, gradient effect that's perfect for those looking to make a statement with their hair color.
4. Foilayage: Foilayage combines balayage with foils for defined highlights. Hair sections are hand-painted and wrapped in foils to boost color intensity and achieve maximum lightening or contrast.
5. Reverse Balayage: Reverse balayage involves hand-painting darker shades onto lighter hair to add depth and dimension, starting from the roots and blending downwards for a striking and unique look.
Maintaining your Balayage:
Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to prevent color fading and maintain the integrity of your hair.
Avoid washing your hair too frequently, as excessive washing can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause the color to fade more quickly.
Use a color-protecting hair mask or treatment once a week to nourish and hydrate your hair, keeping it healthy and vibrant.
Limit heat styling and use a heat protectant spray when styling with hot tools to minimize damage and preserve the color.
Schedule regular touch-up appointments with your stylist to maintain the depth and dimension of your balayage.
Product Recommendations:
Balayage is a versatile and low-maintenance hair coloring technique that adds depth and dimension to your locks. By choosing the right type of balayage, following a proper maintenance routine, and using the recommended products, you can keep your color looking fresh and vibrant for weeks to come. February is the ideal time to channel your inner romantic and adopt this coquettish hairstyle. If you've been eager to rock Sabrina's signature style, you're in luck! In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to achieve her coveted hairstyle.
1. Bring Reference Images:
Before stepping foot into the salon, arm yourself with a collection of Sabrina Carpenter's hairstyle photos that resonate with you. These visual references will serve as a roadmap for your hairstylist, ensuring you're both on the same page regarding the desired outcome.
2. Request a Medium-Length Layered Haircut:
The cornerstone of Sabrina's hairstyle is her medium-length haircut with layers that add texture and movement to her locks. When consulting with your hairstylist, ask for a similar cut that falls around shoulder length or slightly longer. Emphasize the importance of incorporating layers throughout your hair to achieve that effortless bounce and volume. Don’t forget the bangs! Watch as Mandy shows how it's done in this tutorial video.
3. Ask for Soft Waves:
Sabrina often flaunts her hair with loose, natural-looking waves, imparting a touch of romance to her overall look. To replicate this style, invest in a quality curling iron or wand with a barrel size of approximately 1-1.5 inches. After applying a heat protectant, wrap sections of your hair around the barrel, leaving the ends out for a relaxed, beachy wave effect.
4. Utilize the Right Products:
To enhance your hairstyle's longevity and volume, enlist the help of styling products tailored to your hair type. Begin by applying a volumizing mousse or texturizing spray to damp hair before blow-drying to create a solid foundation. Post-curling, mist your waves with a flexible hold hairspray to maintain their shape without sacrificing movement.
Fix Salon Stylist Picks:
Kerastase Mousse Bouffante: A volumizing and bodifying hair mousse. Flexible long-lasting hold. Heat protectant and humidity resistant. With marula oil, camellia oil, and argan oil.
Redken Quick Blowout Heat Protecting Spray: A lightweight blow dry primer spray for all hair types and textures. It has a bi-phase formula that once shaken, will condition and smooth hair for an effortless blowout.

5. Consider Your Hair Type:
Keep in mind that this hairstyle may require slight modifications to suit your hair's natural texture and tendencies. If your hair is naturally straight or curly, you may need to incorporate additional steps, such as using a flat iron or straightening cream before curling, to achieve the desired smoothness and uniformity.
6. Regular Maintenance:
To keep your haircut looking fresh and vibrant, prioritize regular trims every 6-8 weeks. This will help prevent split ends and preserve the integrity of your layers, ensuring your hairstyle retains its shape and allure.
With these simple yet effective steps, you're well-equipped to embark on your journey towards channeling Sabrina Carpenter's iconic hairstyle. Remember, communication with your hairstylist is paramount, so don't hesitate to share your vision and preferences.
